By 15:00 we were ready for the second part of our day. After spending the morning in the mountains above Ferma, we headed towards the coast, knowing that the sea would likely be at its warmest during the afternoon. The drive from our hotel took around twenty minutes and led us back to the familiar combination of sunshine, sea views and dry summer air that had already become the soundtrack of our holiday.
Arriving in Analipsi
When we reached Analipsi Beach, we parked close to the shore. Immediately we noticed that the area offered two different ways into the water. To the left was the main beach, while to the right a staircase or ladder led directly down into the sea. We chose the beach.
Just near the entrance stood a sign advertising free sunbeds for restaurant customers. Like many beaches in Crete, the waterfront blended naturally into a row of tavernas and cafés. The atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming rather than crowded or commercial.
The beach itself was surprisingly narrow yet stretched a long distance along the coast. Small stones appeared near the edges, but the central section consisted mostly of comfortable ground for entering the water.
Warm Water and Clear Views
The sea was exactly what we had hoped for. The water felt pleasantly warm and inviting. One detail surprised us: unlike many beaches on Crete, the seabed sloped away relatively gently. Instead of becoming deep almost immediately, we could walk out at a comfortable pace.
The water was exceptionally clear. Looking down through the surface, we could easily observe small fish moving through the shallows. Every now and then schools drifted past, reflecting the sunlight in flashes of silver.
Not far from us stood a fisherman wearing nothing more than swimming trunks. Rather than fishing from the shore, he stood directly in the sea using only a fishing line and a float. The image seemed perfectly suited to the slow rhythm of the afternoon.
Above us, a few clouds occasionally crossed in front of the sun. They provided brief moments of shade before disappearing again into the bright blue sky. Within minutes the sunlight returned and the sea regained its sparkling appearance.
Hours in the Sea
What had originally been planned as a short beach stop quickly turned into several hours in the water. The combination of warm temperatures, calm conditions and clear visibility made it difficult to leave.
We alternated between swimming, floating and simply watching the life around us. Fish appeared from time to time, children played along the shoreline, and conversations drifted from the beachfront restaurants. There was no need for an agenda. The afternoon unfolded at its own pace.
As the day slowly moved towards evening, the atmosphere softened. The light became warmer, the beach slightly quieter and the air more comfortable.
Ending the Day the Cretan Way
Eventually we left the water, dried off and prepared for the evening. Our plan was simple: finish the day in a local taverna, enjoying good food while looking back on another memorable day in southeastern Crete.
Analipsi may not be the most famous beach on the island, but for us it delivered exactly what we were looking for: warm water, easy swimming, clear visibility and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
- The beach offers both a traditional beach entrance and direct sea access via steps or a ladder.
- If you enjoy warm water, the mid-to-late afternoon can be an excellent time for a swim.
- The central section of the beach has fewer stones than the edges.
- Beachfront tavernas make it easy to combine swimming with food and drinks.
Sometimes the best beach days are not about famous landmarks but about clear water, warm sunshine and having nowhere else you need to be.
