Today was the final day of our journey through Crete. As usual, we started the morning with breakfast at the hotel and spent some time enjoying the familiar surroundings one last time. Before checking out, we took a short walk around the property, exploring the nearby area and appreciating the landscape that had become home during our stay.
Eventually it was time to leave. We checked out and began the drive towards Heraklion Airport. Although our holiday was coming to an end, we were not quite ready to head directly to the terminal. Instead, we kept our eyes open for one final adventure.
A Spontaneous Stop
During several previous drives around eastern Crete, we had noticed a dramatic gorge in the distance. Every time we passed it, we promised ourselves that if an opportunity appeared, we would stop and explore a little more closely. On our final day, that opportunity finally arrived.
Using Google Maps, we searched for a route that would bring us as close as possible by car. Even so, we still faced a walk of roughly twenty minutes before reaching our viewpoint. The destination was Cha Gorge, located near Pachia Ammos and considered one of the most impressive natural landmarks in eastern Crete.
The gorge itself was visible long before we reached it. Deep, rugged and dramatic, it cut through the mountainside like a giant crack in the landscape. According to local travel information, the gorge is generally suitable only for experienced climbers and canyon specialists. We had no intention of attempting such a route, but we were determined to get close enough to appreciate its beauty.
Approaching the Gorge
As we followed the path, the scenery constantly changed. The route led through olive groves filled with silvery-green leaves shimmering in the sunlight. Dry grasses and rugged rocks lined the trail while the surrounding mountains rose steeply around us.
The weather could hardly have been better. Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees Celsius, and the sun remained strong, yet a powerful wind blowing in from the north provided welcome relief. Instead of feeling uncomfortable, the conditions were ideal for a final walk.
When we finally reached a point close to the gorge, the scale of the landscape became even more impressive. The steep rock walls appeared almost vertical in places, creating a dramatic contrast against the bright blue sky. It was easy to understand why experienced adventurers are drawn to this challenging place.
Goats and Great Views
We spent a surprisingly long time simply standing and observing the surroundings. A few goats wandered across the rocky terrain, appearing perfectly at home among the cliffs and sparse vegetation. Their calm presence somehow matched the atmosphere of the place.
The gorge itself commanded most of our attention, but it was not the only highlight. From our position, we could also enjoy magnificent views across the wider landscape. Looking out through the olive groves, we were rewarded with spectacular panoramas of the bay near Agios Nikolaos.
The contrast between the mountains and the sea seemed particularly striking on this final day. Behind us rose rugged rock formations shaped by thousands of years of geological activity. Ahead of us stretched the calm blue waters of the bay, sparkling under the summer sun.
A Perfect Farewell to Crete
Eventually we turned back towards the car. The walk was not long, but it delivered exactly what we were hoping for: one final memorable experience before leaving the island.
There was something symbolic about ending our holiday at Cha Gorge. Throughout the trip, Crete had surprised us with beaches, mountains, ancient cities, caves, plateaus and remote villages. This final stop combined many of those elements in a single landscape. Mountains, sea, olive groves, wildlife and dramatic geological formations all came together in one last unforgettable scene.
As we continued towards Heraklion Airport, we found ourselves already talking about future visits. Crete had once again proved that even on the final day, there is always one more spectacular place waiting to be discovered.
- Cha Gorge is impressive even if you do not enter the gorge itself.
- Wear suitable footwear for the approach paths.
- Bring water, especially during the summer months.
- The viewpoints around the gorge are ideal for photography.
Sometimes the best farewell is not a planned attraction but a spontaneous stop that reminds you why you fell in love with a destination in the first place.
